Centro Evangelico in Isola Del Gran Sasso is two hours east of Rome, a few minutes from the Adriatic sea. The camp sits under the Gran Sasso, one of the highest mountain peaks in Italy. Founded in 1950 by Pasquele & Filomene Fiene, the ministry was originally designed to be an Evangelical Church & Training Center. The founders faced intense persecution from the Roman Catholic Church in the early days, but found an inroad into the community by scheduling kid’s camps in the early ’60s. It has grown into a hub for the Evangelical Church in Italy, welcoming over 3,000 visitors each year. About 15 years ago, the current directors of the camp, Joe & Stefania Hunziker, began a local English Camp for elementary school students in the surrounding area. The children who come to this camp are almost entirely unchurched. This unique opportunity has opened the door to so many gospel opportunities to children and families in the surrounding area.
Italy has a rich tradition in church history. It features prominently in the New Testament, and is the home of the largest church in the world, the Roman Catholic Church. While the country is filled with crosses and cathedrals, Italy never experienced a Reformation to recover the gospel. The country is in great need of the gospel. Less than 1% of the population identifies as a born again Christian. The Evangelical church in the country, though small, is very strong. They are laying the foundation for reformation and revival. It has been an honor to partner with several churches and ministries in Italy.
