This past Tuesday, men at Alliance and in the community came together for worship and dinner. This was a time for the men to get to know one another.
A large group gathered outside in anxious anticipation for comradery, chicken, and coleslaw. Fresh-out-of-the-grease hush puppies were served to the men as they waited in line. The gym echoed with conversations and deep laughter as men poured in with plates of food.
Hunter Coultrap and a band led the group in well-known worship songs that spoke to the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. The lyrics of “Great Things” speaks to the heart:
Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things
See what our Savior has done
See how His love over-comes
He has done great things
He has done great things
Following worship, Pastor Josh Hayes brought a message about being a “meek” (not weak) man. Matthew 5:5 says:
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
The word “blessed” can be translated to “congratulations.” Pastor Josh challenged the men to ask their wives or someone very close to them to be genuine with us about how we treat others. Are we gentle? Are we kind? He gave us a piece of paper to give to them to write a candid letter about what it’s like to know us.
The progression of Matthew 5 tells us that “Blessed are the poor in spirit…Blessed are those who mourn…Blessed are the meek…” When we lay broken before Jesus and are genuinely broken over our sin, then meekness comes.
Let us strive for meekness in this body of believers – just like Jesus is gentle with us.
